We have did a massive survey for Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) Survey
and Awareness Program along with Shri Cheema Foundation, the project is supported by the World Bank.
Menstrual hygiene is critical to the dignity and well being of women
and girls and an important part of basic hygiene, sanitation and reproductive health services for which every woman
and girl has a right. However, menstruation is too often seen as a taboo, with many negative cultural attitudes associated
with it, including the idea that menstruating women and girls are ‘contaminated’, ‘dirty’ and ‘impure’.
The projects overall objective is to demonstrate a Social Marketing model whereby Private Sectors and micro and
small enterprise actions will be facilitated to impact on the social sphere through Inclusive Business Approach to
address a problem affecting adolescent girls in schools in society. The project planned to conduct a series of baseline
surveys for impact, evaluation and sustainability checks of the project.
This report presents findings of the baseline survey of :
1. Assessment of the general awareness levels regarding Menstrual Hygiene
Management in the state of Tamil Nadu.
2. To look at the impact of the free supply of sanitary napkins in the State.
3. The status of production units and probable linkage to the Government supply for sustainable
business initiative and Social Marketing model whereby Private Sectors and micro and small enterprise actions will be facilitated to
impact on the social sphere through Inclusive Business Approach to address a problem affecting adolescent girls in schools and women in society.
4. The product testing of bio-degradable products and their acceptance as a product alternate
in its current form.
5. The baseline survey tries to look at the present eco-system in the case of Menstrual
Hygiene Management in the State.
What to be improved in the Existing method
We have identified the key features and the method to develop Bio degradable
Napkins, in that case we can achieve environmental friendly napkins. Since if a napkin is buried or dumped then we are dumping
in the form of plastic for example if a women use 5 pads for her cycle then we can correlate with the women's use napkin all over
India let's assume if 50 crore women are using then the dumping of plastic is around 250 crore napkins are dumped so we can assume
the consequences, so we have prepared the base design for manufacturing of bio degradable napkin pads, if we get support then
we are able to accomplish the task.
